Crewe and Nantwich RUFC Calling On Support To Help Former Player Achieve His GB Dream!

By Steve Holding

Former Crewe and Nantwich RUFC player Kieran Flynn has been selected to represent GB in wheelchair rugby!

Former Crewe and Nantwich RUFC player Kieran Flynn; who was badly injured in a match back in 2013 leaving him with limited use of his legs has been selected to represent GB in wheelchair rugby!

At just 21 the former Brine Leas and Malbank School pupil was representing Crewe and Nantwich RUFC in a pre-season friendly against Christleton RUFC when he was badly injured in a tackle. Five years later Kieran has been selected to represent GB in the wheelchair rugby, an incredible achievement, but he now needs to raise £6000 to fund a specialist wheelchair.

After coming to terms with his life changing injury Flynn; who is still a regular supporter at Crewe and Nantwich RUFC; threw himself into wheelchair rugby and is delighted to have been selected for the GB Squad. However in order to reach his full potential Flynn needs to purchase a specialist sports wheelchair that will cost in the region of £6000. Flynn has already put forward £1250 himself and has secured match funding from the generous Matt Hampson Foundation, but that still leaves him with over £1500 to fundraise before the end of October. Last Saturday Crewe and Nantwich RUFC kicked off the fundraising with a kit sale that raised £250, and will continue to fundraise on each match day with a raffle and collection, but any support from local organisations would be extremely welcome.

Kieran Flynn comments: “My current rugby chair is oversized, the heaviest chair ever tested in the sports science laboratory at Loughborough and is holding back my game. I guess you could liken it to playing rugby in a pair of boots three sizes too big. My new chair is made to measure, recommended by elite players and coaches and will not only increase my enjoyment and competitiveness of the sport but hopefully allow me to show my true potential in wheelchair rugby. I’m extremely grateful for all the support I’ve received so farl especially from the Matt Hampson Foundation, and I’m hopeful that we will reach the £6000 needed!”

Nicola Joyce, Crewe and Nantwich RUFC Chairman comments: “We are extremely proud of Kieran’s achievements and will continue to fundraise for his new chair over the coming weeks in a bid to do everything we possibly can to support him in this incredible opportunity. He’s a big part of our club and we wish him every success in his wheelchair rugby career!”

If you are interested in holding a fundraising event to support Kieran Flynn’s campaign, no matter how great or small, please contact the press team and we will put you in touch with Kieran, all support will be greatly appreciated!
