Bradley Bags a Brace (Again!!)

by Julian Gilding

Crewe and Nantwich 2nd Team 31 – Broughton Park 3rd Team 27

For once we were only slightly affected by last minute team changes and with the likes of Rob George, Matt Cherry and Qhama Matthews on the bench we left the Rugby Club in good heart.

The game started and within 2 minutes David Curry had already imposed himself on the game when he broke clear after bowling over one of the opposition players and offloaded to the speedy Dom Bradley to score his first try. Stuart van Wyk confidently put the ball between the posts for the extras.

Broughton Park fought back hard with some inventive play from their captain and fly half and soon they had pulled the score back to just 4 points with a well taken penalty into the wind. Dave Germain led the team with distinction, his line out throwing and all round game showing that he is nearing his best again.

The super speedy Bradley was over the line again after just 8 minutes, this time showing a clean pair of heels and running round behind the posts again for van Wyk to convert. Despite being one man down Broughton Park refused to lie down and their fleet footed backs created a change down their left flank to score a superb try. The loss of Chris Pemberton (dislocated elbow) saw james guy step up to the front row for the first time and the introduction of Bobby George into the back row.

With Dave Jenkins stepping into the fly half role he put a deft chip over the defense which allowed Andy Farrington to collect and go over in the right hand corner – he collected the additional points with a superbly struck conversion. Again the home side hauled themselves back into the game and a converted try left the scores 21 – 15 at half time.

A converted try after just 2 minutes of the 2nd half starting put the home side up by a point this seemed to re-invigorate Curry who produced his best game of the season and a series of drives eventually gave Jenkins the opportunity to burst through himself to go over for a deserved try.

The bulk of the second half seemed to be spent on the back foot after decision after decision went against the travelling team. Superb defence seemed to hold the Broughton Park team at bay. Debutant George Cope had already made an impressive start in the black and white jersey but had to move from back row to scrum half when Josh Grant seemed to be on the end of a misinterpretation by the man in charge. The last quarter seemed to also bring Rob Black to life – where he turned over the ball in close contact on numerous occasions’ and led the charge in the opposite direction. To top Cope’s first start he went over in the right hand corner to bring the points tally to 31 . . . . the loss of their captain seemed to revive the Broughton spirit and a try in the 46th minute really put a cat amongst the pigeons.

Fortunately time ran out before the Mighty Black and Whites could be penalised any further and the game came to a thankful end.

Next week sees the ever impressive steam roller Sale Sharks FC visit the Vagrants – let’s try to get ourselves available for that one please.
