Powerful pack performance dominates AK in terrible conditions

Crewe and Nantwich Ladies 32 – 0 Altrincham and Kersal
Captain Mollie Latham scored her first hattrick in one of the performances of the season for CNRUFC Ladies away at Altrincham and Kersal on Sunday.
The squad beset by a number of injuries following their big win against Ormskirk on the 8th January outplayed a physical and improving Altrincham and Kersal team in appalling conditions to cement their number 2 position behind unbeaten Barnsley. In a forwards dominated game, CNRUFC Ladies gained early ascendancy despite fielding a number of players out of their normal positions. Louise Reade and Chelsea Hobbs particularly impressed with a dominant front row performance against far heavier opposition.
Despite the incessant rain and heavy ground, Crewe and Nantwich looked to move the ball early from kick-off, Hannah Templeman repeatedly getting the ball over the gain-line with Katie Leetham and newcomer Stacie Stacie Jay Godfrey combining well. Although flying wing Hannah Thornhill was well marked, the back 3 posed a constant threat throughout the game. Sally Cox continually pinned the AK team in their own half from some good box kicking, with Phoebe Jay, out of position in the 2nd row making a big nuisance of herself throughout in both the tight and loose.
Mollie Latham has consistently put in big performances this season, her opening try coming from a series of forward drives through Debs Sayer, Steph Farrar and Lauren Lauren 'Mudds' Muddiman, crashing over from short range. She followed up with her second try from a penalty move, before completing her hattrick from a fine break down the left flank early in the second half.
The game opened up in the second half with Crewe’s superior fitness taking its toll on a tiring defence. Christy Roberts and Steph Farrar continually repelled any front foot ball from AK, with several turnovers giving Crewe a chance to counter-attack. Steph was unlucky not to score a break away try when a Crewe player was adjudged off-side, but Katie Leetham took her chance moments later from a well weighted pass from Jordan Morris. Lauren Muddiman crashed over from an 8 pick, before Nicola Ticehurst scored an outstanding debut try moments from time, finishing off a full-team effort, recycling the ball to give Nic a bit of space. Nic shrugged off two covering tackles before running the ball in under the posts.
Coach Nick Kennedy said “we expected a physical game, and our preparation couldn’t have been worse, but this team are simply relentless. I’m delighted with the spirit and attitude, and to back it up with accuracy in such awful conditions is a credit to all the work they have put in this season”.
Crewe and Nantwich Ladies play top of the table Barnsley Ladies at home on January 29
