3rd Team continue winning start to season
By Steve Holding
The 3rd team continued their winning start to the season with a home victory against Linley and Kidsgrove, in a game that finished 26-10.
Both sides failed to make the most of possession in a very cagey first half, however it eventually opened up and there was some good rugby on display. Crewe broke the deadlock after 20 minutes after strong carries from the forwards sucked in the Linley defence and the quick handling from the backs meant winger,(name here), was able to score his first try of the game. A good conversion from Chris Maloney meant Crewe had a 7-0 lead.
As half time approached Linley grew into the game and Crewe allowed their penalty count to rise. However having pushed the Linley team back into their own half it looked as if they would go into half time with the lead. Though the Linley full back had other ideas and he went through a gap in the defence and scored. The conversion was missed and Crewe went in with a 7-5 lead.
C&N made a slow start to the second half and were punished by strong carries from the Linley pack, who allowed the scrum half the chance to dive over the line, but the conversion was missed and there was only a 3 point gap, which was more than achievable.
Crewe swiftly responded as Al Hargreaves was able to crash over on the 50 minute mark putting Crewe back in front. The subsequent conversion from Chris Maloney meant Crewe were now in front by 4.
Crewe were not done yet as they punished a tiring Linley team, Hargreaves scoring his second after breaking through the weak tackles. 19-10.
There was one more try in Crewe as they searched for the bonus point and it came through (name here) scoring his second of the game. A pick and go from 8 Mark Manaton pop to Chris and quick hands from Centre Ruben meant the bonus point was secured and so was the win.
The home side saw out the final moments and made it 3 from 3 so far this season.
Next Match: Newcastle (staffs) 2nds.
