Crewe & Nantwich RUFC Junior Academy played their first game of the season on Sunday, an away fixture against Winnington Park Junior Colts.
Sadly the fixture started with a minutes silence, in memory of Winnington Park Senior Colts tragically losing a player called Will Glendining over the weekend.
Whilst a number of C&N players were unable to attend due to some selection opportunities happening on the same day, C&N fielded a strong starting 15 and bench.
WP scored the initial 2 tries but failed to convert them, they were soon answered by a try from Dougie Dobson and an outstanding conversion from the side line by Harvey Chamberlain, to see C&N trail by just 3 points.
Another converted try from WP was swiftly followed by a try and another conversion, both from Harvey Chamberlain for C&N. The rest of the first half was hard fought and when the game stopped for the interval C&N were trailing by just 3 points at 17 - 14.
The second half started well for C&N but WP broke through and scored their fourth try, though they were unable to convert it. C&N responded well and had a try held up, soon after WP scored another 2 converted tries almost back to back.
By the time the game moved into the last 15 minutes, the hard tackling and pace started to take its toll and WP were just that bit fitter and stronger, breaking away to put more points past C&N.
The final result was a 57-14 loss however this did not reflect the game. As a team C&N fought to the end, they did not drop their heads and communicated throughout.
After the game, the C&N players commented that it was one of the most enjoyable games of rugby they had played.
It may have been a loss on points but it was a great game of rugby, played well by all players.
