On a very hot Sunday morning for late September, we welcomed Altricham Kersal to Vagrants Park for our first home game of the season.

We had narrowly lost to this team last season in the Cheshire Plate semi-final, so the lads were ready to reverse the result.

The under 16's kicked off and started well putting pressure on the visitors, eventually this led to a line out for the black and whites on the Kersal 22 line. Clean ball from the line out from the forwards and into the hands of the backs, a training ground move that we have been practicing for a few weeks, saw Matt Walker clear through a gap in the Kersal defence and score under the post, Calum Meakin adding the extras, 7-0

The game was being played at great pace and the visitors were putting in some great tackles and trying to get the ball moving through hands when in possession. However all the play was taking place in the Kersal half, the pressure finally told and the Unders 16's were awarded a penalty just outside the opposition 22. The under 16's elected the kick for goal and up stepped Calum Meakin, however the ball hit the right hand upright and some great follow up play from Jake Threadgold saw the ball rebound of the posts and into his hands to score to the right of the posts, Calum Meakin adding the extras. 14-0

Now not only was it hot outside, but things were getting heated on the pitch. This led to each side losing a player for 7 minutes to soak up the rays.

More space on the pitch led to the next Try form the U16's by Jake Threadgold and again converted by Calum Meakin, 21-0.

Kersal were the next to score with a neat little run by their scrum half down the blindside from a scrum, chipping our full back and going in the corner, conversion missed. 21-5

HT 21-5

The second half was pretty much in the same vain as the first with a lot of play taking place in the Kersal half, The under 16's putting their opposition under pressure at every opportunity. But Kersal with ball in hand looked dangerous, but for some aggressive tackling the visitors would have added to their scoreline.

Now events taking place on the pitch, and the fact that I was refereeing has led to some vague recollection of the second half. So to summarise from a a catch and drive at a line out on the Kersal 5m meter line Joe Telfer was held up over the line. The ensuing 5 meter scrum more successful with driving play George Spalding managed to reach out and score near the post. Conversion successful 28-5.

From the Kersal restart the ball was moved through hands and out to Gabe Machin who outpaced the cover defence and stepped the full back to score right of the posts, conversion missed. 33-5

And finally Matt Walker got on the score sheet again after some strong running through the backs and scored under the post and kicked his own conversion, 40-5

FT 40-5

A good result against a strong and aggressive team.
