Great start to the season, 4 from 4

Crewe and Nantwich 32 Glossop 7

The Under 16’s welcomed Glossop Rufc to the Vagrants, following last year’s very close and competitive encounter it was one the whole team was looking forward to.

Having been relocated to the back paddock, the playing surface looked in fine fettle, the drainage system had stood up well after some heavy down pours over the last week. Although the greasy surface and constant drizzle made handling difficult in both the warmup and the opening quarter of the game.

The forwards started with a little less intensity than last week, which was understandable with handling proving difficult, once we got into our patterns of play, make inroads into the Glossop defence. It did seem that every time we got on to the front foot, we gave away a penalty, or knocked the ball on, which gave Glossop ample opportunities to clear their lines and relieve pressure.

With the game looking like it was going to be a tight affair, Logan opened the scoring with a well taken penalty, this seemed to take the frantic edge off our play with the handling errors stopping and the silly errors becoming less frequent.
Ollie added to his increasing try tally for the season with a well taken try close to the line after a sustained period of pressure with forwards and back working well together.
From the restart the ball found its way to Jacob who made a break over half way found Jarrad in support who took the ball at pace being pulled down close to the line, after a number of phases Ollie managed to force his way over the line running a great line and taking a number of defenders with him, Logan knocked over the 2 from a testing angle.
Ellis, Harley, Alfie and Joe had now found the right tempo for the conditions and were making good yardage with strong runs, and Jacob, Jarrad, Ben and Reefe were looking dangerous out wide with the ball being distributed well through Tom and Logan. The forwards were creating a good platform for the team to play and from a lot of good work including a good break from Dan M, Dan MK popped up on the blind side to score his first try in a long time. Logan added the extras from the touchline.
Halftime 22 – 0

The second half continued in much the same way, with good work being done by all. Glossop had obviously doubled their efforts in defence and scoring early in the half was tough going.
The set piece was very strong, not losing a line out or scrum all game and putting pressure on the Glossop set piece. James looked solid at prop following Ollie having to leave the field through injury. Pete’s throwing in was good, with Tommy and Max controlling the air space around the lineout.
Crewe looked dangerous every time they got into the Glossop 22, on one occasion a great piece of play with multiple offloads led to Alfie being held up over the line, from the resulting scrum, Jarrad was release with a planned strike move to score a well-deserved try.
With a Glossop struggling with a few injuries, and a number of Crewe subs donning the Glossop shirt to keep the numbers even the game looked to be petering out, but with 1 minute to go Crewe put pressure on a Glossop Scrum close to their line, the backs cut down the space in defence causing Glossop to spill the ball, Jacob gladly collected the bouncing ball a forced his way over the whitewash bringing the score to 32 – 0 with 20 seconds to play.
From the kickoff Crewe conceded a daft penalty and after several phases Reefe now playing for Glossop found himself in space and scored a try which was expertly converted.

Final score 32 -7
Many thanks to Glossop for making the trip, and a great game.
