Crewe & Nantwich 28 Newcastle 19

Crewe and Nantwich 28 Newcastle (staffs) 19

On a wonderful summers day, following an exciting morning for the mini and junior section, the Clubs senior colts put on a fantastic show to take the points against an extremely strong Newcastle side of which Crewe had never beaten before.

The game started a little slowly for the home side, as Newcastle enforced their own game and scored an early try from the outstanding outside centre following a deft chip from the equally impressive fly half. Crewe bounced back quickly gaining good field position and possession, Tom Ryle spotted the blind side winger out of position kicked in behind him allowing Logan Lynch to collect and score. The conversation was missed bringing the score to 5 - 7 with 15 min played.
Newcastle responded in style again showing how dangerous their 3 quarter line was running the ball in from half way. Crewe had a lot of possession and territory and following a lot of huff and puff by the forwards Lynch darted through a gap and expertly offloaded to Luke Thomas who on debut playing a yr up, carried several defenders over the line, Lynch converted which added to an earlier penalty taking the score to 13 -12 with 7 min left of the first half. Crewe continued to play great rugby with good continuity and looked in control until the outstanding Newcastle 13 stripped the ball off a Crewe forward and ran the length of the pitch unopposed and against the run of play. Half time 13 - 19 to Newcastle.
The second half team talk still ringing in the Crewe teams ears, started strongly with the conditioning over the last 8 weeks starting to show, following a barn storming run by Adam Deegan, Crewe set up camp close to Newcastle’s line, The back line produced a move out of the top draw, if you saw it at premiership level commentators would be waxing lyrical about it for days, perfect running lines from Thomas and O’Donnovan and a pass from Lynch that would grace any stage put Khol Preece over the line untouched. Conversion missed from a tight angle 18 - 19 with 20 min to go. Crewe eventually took the lead which ultimately they were never to relinquish as Lynch knocked over a testing penalty, then took control as Lynch ghosted through a gap on halfway rounded the fullback to score under the posts making the conversion a formality. Crewe held on for the final few minutes, ending the game with the most deserved victory. As always the lads that are on the score sheet get mentioned but their names are never going to be up in lights without the hard work of the team. Outstanding to a man.
Best of luck to Newcastle for the rest of the season.
